Mr. Forrest has over 25 years experience in civil and structural consulting engineering. In his capacity as Director of his previous consultancy, Mr. Forrest was extensively involved in residential, commercial and government projects, which included being the Project Director for the development of the Mirvac Lead Lease Village Consortium Olympic Athlete’s Village for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. 


Forrest Engineering Solutions Pty Limited (FES) was established by Mr. Forrest in 2000 and is a structural and civil engineering firm specializing in problematic sites and the “forensic analysis” of building damage for the purpose of commenting on structural and serviceability implications. All design and documentation prepared by FES is overseen and completed by Mr. Forrest.

FES has many long-standing clients, which include successful nursing home developers, commercial builders and prominent large-scale builders throughout Sydney. Through our involvement with the large-scale prominent builders, FES has designed over 3,000 dwellings across nine (9) separate housing estate developments in Sydney.



Structural & Civil: Design & Documentation

Forensic Engineering Investigations (FEI) was established by Mr. Forrest in 2004 as the “investigative” division of FES. FEI is incorporated under company insurances held by FES and operates under the same ABN.

FEI was established in order to specifically attend to the investigation of building defects and assist in legal proceedings as an Expert Witness. Forensic and structural investigations and the preparation of Expert Reports are solely completed by Mr. Forrest.

Mr. Forrest has extensive forensic engineering and investigative experience with the completion of numerous reports for a client base ranging from private clients, Government organisations, mining organisations, insurance companies and national legal practices. Mr. Forrest has completed Forensic and Expert Reports for sites in the Sydney Metropolitan area inclusive of the Northwest sector, the Blue Mountains area and the Southwest sector and has most recently been involved in legal proceedings for the dwellings located in Burleigh Waters, Queensland.

Mr. Forrest has been called upon to be an Expert Witness in numerous legal proceedings and these services are provided in accordance with Schedule K of the Expert Witness Code of Conduct.

Forensic Investigations & Expert Witness Assistance:

  • Expert Witness and Court Attendance Assistance in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Supreme Court of Queensland, District Court of New South Wales, Local Court of New South Wales, Department of Fair Trading and the Consumer Trade & Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT);
  • Litigation Compliant Reports, and;
  • Mediation Compliant Reports.




Building Engineered Constructions (BEC) is a division of FES and has been established to specifically assist small to medium scale builders in all forms of construction in a cost effective form of delivery. BEC is incorporated under company insurances held by FES and operates under the same ABN.

This division is coordinated by our Engineering Manager, Mr. James Forrest, who holds a Trade Certificate II in Carpentry and also a Certificate IV in Building & Construction (Building).

The technical proficiency of this division is overseen by Mr. John Forrest and provides formal engineering certification to the many aspects of building which are now required under the EP&A Act legislation.



Innovative Engineered Structures Pty Limited (IES) was developed as a separate entity (ABN 43 153 963 592) to FES and was established to undertake the specialist design assessment and specifications of a unique residential slab concept utilising trademark CUPOLEX products.

This system is referred to as a Structural Dome Slab (SDS) system and it is envisaged that this SDS system will absorb a significant proportion of the current polystyrene waffle pod market.

Mr. Forrest is currently assessing and working towards the introduction of the CUPOLEX SDS system in a future version of the Australian residential building standard code AS2870 – 2011 Residential Slabs and Footings – Construction (AS2870).

The CUPOLEX dome system comprises of recycled plastic extrusion moulded elements of varying heights from 135mm – 700mm.

Each varying dome height has a variable dome profile with additional fitments referred to as ‘beton stops’ and ‘stop ends’.

The placement of the CUPOLEX domes onto a pre-prepared building platform creates ‘dome clusters’ over which concrete and reinforcement are placed to create the SDS system. The concrete over the domes varies to a minimum 60mm at the apex of the dome to the full depth of the dome.

To create the required unit stiffness in the overall slab footprint, internal stiffening beams of suitable depth and reinforcement are required throughout the SDS system.

The frequency, spacing and orientation of these domes and stiffening beams are a function of the detailed analysis incorporated in the SDS Design Software, which IES have created and will continue to develop. The current SDS Design Software has been prepared to comply with Section 4.0 Design by Engineering Principals of AS2870.

IES is also investigating other new initiatives for the construction and recreation industries which require high level structural and civil engineering analysis in the feasibility stages.



The Utilisation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) & REVIT© Software

FES has most recently been researching the utilisation of the Building Information Model (BIM) and Revit© Structure Software drafting program for various large-scale Projects located in the Sydney area. 
BIM is the process of generating and managing building data during its lifecycle, using three-dimensional building modelling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. BIM can ultimately be used to demonstrate the processes of construction and facility operation.

The future potential of utilising the BIM and Revit© Structure Software in large scale Projects is that it can improve the visualisation of the construction process and building lifecycle, improve productivity, increase coordination of construction documentation, embed vital information such as specific material, location of details and quantities required for estimation and tendering, increase speed of deliver and reduce overall costs.
